A domino effect, caused by the developments in the Arab world, spreads on the territory of the former USSR. Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan seem to become hot points, according to some experts. The reason is the inability of the authorities to detect new trends forming among young people, who are dissatisfied with poor social policy. On the other hand, probably there is destructive influence of foreign forces, especially when Afghanistan is still a weak link for all of larger Central Asia.
The situation in Armenia is rather specific. The leader of the opposition Ter Petrosyan stated that the opposition will strive for consolidation and the demonstrations of ANC will implement functions of the public forum. The coordinator of ANC Levon Zurabyan commented on the main reasons for worsening social situation in the interview to Vestnik Kavkaza. He said that they are vicious political and economic system: the president and a few his close supporters use the state with only one aim – making profit. The question is: will Armenia be able to change this situation?
The ultimatum to the government by Ter Petrosyan includes several significant issues. First of all they concern anti-corruption context. He demands to publish in media revenues of all top officials and members of their families, i.e. presidents, ministers, deputy ministers, heads of regions, mayors, judges, prosecutors, generals and deputies of the parliament over the whole history of independent Armenia. Ter Petrosyan also urged the EU and the US to stop supporting of the current regime in Armenia.
It is obvious that the leader of the opposition tries to relay on population. Now both the authorities and the opposition will appeal to the same social groups with the same mottoes. The government would say that it provides the stability of the state.
Libya’s experience shows that the winner should score gains for the international airtime. It is not clear whom Western countries will support. Anyway, destabilization in Armenia will cause serious risks for the whole South Caucasian region.
