Kazan meeting: between war and peace

Kazan meeting: between war and peace
A new round of Azerbaijani-Armenian peace talks is imminent. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is trying to play a major role in establishing a peace treaty, has invited the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders to Kazan in order to discuss the principles of a future peace agreement.
At all such meetings there are hopes that the parties will find a compromise and come to an agreement. Speaking about the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict, one should note that the parties have already admitted that they are ready to work on a peace agreement project. However, it's still not clear how devoted they are to the idea, or what they are ready for.

Nevertheless, sceptics believe that this meeting will turn out to be another useless round of peace talks that will lead to nothing. The OSCE co-chairs, in such a case, would probably make a formal statement and that would be all. Still, there is something different in the coming Kazan meeting.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, addressing the Azeri people on the country's National Day, said that he is optimistic about the coming round of peace talks with Armenia. Visiting Slovenia, the Azerbaijani leader also said that his country is interested in a fair peace agreement with Armenia. Russia and Armenia have also announced that the parties are ready for compromise.

Political analyst Thomas de Vaal is certain that, no matter what the results of the Kazan meeting may be, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh
will probably change. If the parties didn't reach agreement it would make the military option more likely, so the status quo would change anyway.

Speaking about the international community, one should understand that the OSCE co-chairs and the Russian President are interested in peace
making. They will probably urge the parties to come to an agreement.
