On March 25 the Republic of South Ossetia will hold presidential elections. The political crisis, which took place in South Ossetia a few months ago, should be settled. The country will get a legally elected leader. However, passions about the previous elections, which were considered to be invalid, are still rising in the republic. On the one hand, Anatoly Bibilov urged all participants of the election race in December 2011 to reject participation in this campaign. The head of the Emergency Ministry of South Ossetia emphasized that he thinks that “no personal targets and ambitions can equal to a human life.”
This decision might enable the citizens of South Ossetia to avoid rivalry attitude and make their choice with a clean sheet. However, not all local politicians are ready to follow this principle. For example, Alla Dzhioyeva announced her intention to hold inauguration as President of the republic on February 10th. Dzhioyeva told the deputy president, Vadim Brovtsev, that new elections will lead to additional spending, while money could be spent to for implementation of the social programs.
At the same time, even supporters of Dzhioyeva consider this step as indigested and hasty. The closest supporter of Dzhioyeva, Anatoly Barankevich, stated: “We cannot be brinkmen. We should be patient and composed. I believe inauguration should be canceled, while civilized elections on March 25th should be prepared.”
Further exaggeration of passions is not effective. Almost all political forces of South Ossetia agree with it. While majority of local politicians is working according to a new political schedule, where March 25th is a key date, supporters of Alla Dzhioyeva try to reverse time. But it seems this position is not popular in the South Ossetian society.
By the moment the Central Election Committee has registered 12 initiative groups on adopting candidates. Soon new candidates for presidency will appear. As for the Russian position, it was declared in December 2011: we are interested in the stability of South Ossetia and further development of strategic partnership between our countries.
