Azerbaijan: towards the elections.

Azerbaijan: towards the elections.

Parliamentary elections will take place in Azerbaijan in autumn in 2010. In contrast to the previous campaign of 2005, the opposition not only has no chances of success, but even cannot draw attention to itself as it has been during the elections of 2005. Due to the fact, that the elections will pass without intrigue the mass media of Azerbaijan still do not consider the elections the problem of the day.

The main problems of the Azerbaijani opposition are the excessive ambitions of its leaders and lack of support among the population of the country. These words can be proved by the fact, that the last meeting on 31, July caused a conflict within the opposition, between the parties of Musavat and Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP). "Calling this meeting that was organized by APFP a united meeting of APFP and Musavat is a sign of mental decease. They must have overheated in the sun, or their illness is so bad, that can't be cured."- said the secretary of the Classical Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (CPFP) Mirmahmud Miralioglu.

Another clear failure was the negotiations between parties DPA, Liberal party of Azerbaijan (LPA), to form an electoral alliance.

The official authorities control the process of elections by skillful using the tensions between the main parties of the opposition to prevent forming of strong alliances.   The ruling New Azerbaijan Party makes efforts to obtain full control of nomination of candidates at all stages of forming of the election list. "Nomination is a right of any citizen. But nomination of our party members that are not in our list is against our party's policy and will. That is why we can no longer afford having these people in our party" - declared the deputy executive secretary of the party Siyavush Novruzov.

In this situation the main goal of the authorities is to receive good replies from the international observers about the preparation and the course of the election, The representative of the general secretary of Council of Europe in Azerbaijan Veronica Cotek, has already given Baku a positive signal:" We consider the coming parliamentary elections as a democratic test for Azerbaijan, that will unveil weather the election committees have learned since their last elections. I have noticed how carefully the elections are planned by the central election committee, and I hope their efforts will grant a result"

To this very day we still do not have an agenda of the campaign.  It is not clear what to discuss with the candidates of the ruling party. The social and economic situation is in the whole stable, the rating of the executive authority is high, and it seems, that these elections are going to turn in to a referendum in support of the president of Azerbajan. No doubt, that once again he will win. Though it is possible to assume, that some political tension will take place in autumn, but more likely it will be a struggle within the inner circle of Ilham Aliev. It is important to show who made the "inevitable victory" possible.

The opposition is still out of the political process.
