All is calm in Baku

Voting in the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan has already started. The prominent political parties and their leaders have taken a break after the campaign race. All the promises have been made, all the programs have been issued, and now everyone is looking forward to the decision of electorate. The question is not only who will win this
race, but also how many people will take part in the vote. This figure will show how many citizens of Azerbaijan care about the future of their country.

According to experts, this campaign was a relatively calm one, peaceful and even boring. There were no scandals, no vehement debates between candidates. The situation in the 2005 was completely different. Then the atmosphere of the orange revolutions increased pressure on the politicians and electorate. Nowadays there are no such sensations.

What's the reason for this change? The answer is that today's authorities make it clear what kind of policy they are going to carry out in the next few years. That is why the discussion was focused on the most acute problems of the country: the economic, social, and political issues.

The population has become more politically aware, more active. That has made the political parties evolve too. Now they are no longer the political enterprises of the 90s, but influential political powers. Cheap populism is no longer effective.

One may be certain that the political system of Azerbaijan is now more stable and mature. The citizens have become politically literate and politicians more responsible. The advantageous changes in the economy are being followed by the development of social institutions.
