Alexei Balashov. Exclusively for Vestnik Kavkaza
Traditional Chechen society has been going through a difficult process of integration into existing in the 20th-21st centuries, the ethnic and social processes. Transformation, often with heavy outside influence, inevitably destroys and leaves in the past the historic forms of existence of the Chechen people, their most interesting internal communications. "Vestnik Kavkaza" tells about some features of the organization of Chechen (more widely – Vainakh) societies, which will be inevitably lost in the coming century.Researchers note that the Islamization the Chechen teips undergone has formed the unique system of Chechen law, which is a mixture of the Sharia law and the traditional Vaynakh law. This means that in the absence of a state and an official legal system, the Chechen society have established its substitutes. These political and legal institutions may be called an ethnic and national statehood based on the Sharia-Adat law.The development of these two tendencies led to an inevitable conflict in the end of the 20th c. The Wahhabi (supported by teh Saudis) took the course of formation of an independent Islamic state. In such state there would be no place for Chechen national peculiarity, traditional institutions since Islam does not recongnize any other forms of indentity then the religious one. All other traditions are labeled as panag and barbarian. On the other hand, the ethnic social and ethnic religious institutions strengthened and the authoritiu of their leader increased as the Chechen society had to react to post-Soviet reforms held in Russia.Through their historical development the Vaynakh peoples established their own political and legal mentality, which should not be considered a archaism, which dates back to the primitive times. In fact the Chechens have always maintained their own statehood. Even though the Russian authorities tried to establish a standard bureucratic system in Chechnya, the Chechen people kept their own hierachy and traditional institutions. However demographics and economy force the Chechens to migrate to the land, which has never been inhabited by them, such as Nothern Russia and big cities. Unemployment, the Internet and modern culture has come to the most isolated regions of the North Caucasus.Today scientists are studying the existing customs and traditional institutions of the Chechen society. We have to hope that the Vaynakhs will manage to maintain their peculiarity, their unique culture, traditions and relations between people.
