In Sukhumi took place a foundation conference of the Russian Scientific
society of Caucasiologists (SSC) founded by Russian and Abkhazian
scientists to join scientific potential. The aim of the SSC is to
strengthen positions of science and civil society for providing
preventive measures and settlement of conflicts.

Conference participants, scientists from Abkhazia, Moscow, Dagestan,
Chechnya, and Rostov-on-Don, were to adopt the SSC charter, but before
there was a heavy discussion. A deputy of the parliament of Abkhazia,
Senior Scientific Researcher of Abkhazian Institute for the Humanities,
Guram Gumba, proposed to found the international organization rather
than the scientific society. However, Doctor of Historical Sciences, the
professor of the World Economy and International Relations Institute of
the RAS, Alexander Кrylov emphasized SSC to be non-governmental
organization. As a result of discussion it was decided to found Russian
Scientific society of Caucasiologists, and scientists of Abkhazia and of
other South Caucasus countries can join it individually. Meanwhile, the
home side decided to found Abkhazian Scientific society of
Caucasiologists. In prospective, these two scientific societies could
form the international association. Alexander Кrylov was elected the
President of Russian SSC. Guram Gumba became the President of Abkhazian SSC.

Scientists reported on the state of Caucasiology in their regions. The
key speaкer was Alexander Кrylov. He considered that today Caucasiology
extended its subject matters. Along with history, languages, folklore of
the Caucasus people, it studies policy, economy, sociology and
religions. Interest in Caucasus increases in different countries of the
world, such as Norway, China, Japan and France. “Caucasiology is very
significant for Russia and countries of South Caucasus”, said A. Кrylov.
The main problems of Caucasiology are the following. First of all, it is
an inconsistency of modern Caucasiologic studies. Moreover, scientific
ties are loose. In addition, doubtful in the context of science sales
literature is published. Finally, Caucasiologic studies are heavy
influenced by ideology and policy. Thus, “the past of the people of
Caucasus became a mosaic of inimical to one another national stories”,
said Russian Caucasiologist, Vladimir Degoev.
