The IAEA Board has adopted a resolution at an extraordinary session, dismissing the nuclear profile of Iran and the topic of a possible military dimension of the nuclear program of Tehran. The decision also cancels all previous resolutions of the Agency toward Tehran. The agency completed the work within the framework of the roadmap on clarifying disputable issues of the Iranian nuclear program. Speaking at the session of the Board, the representative of Russia, Grigory Berdennikov, stated that Moscow believed that the case on ‘assumed research’ in the sphere of military nuclear energy use by Tehran was dismissed, as the IAEA didn’t find “sights of unregistered nuclear materials or unregistered nuclear activity” in its report.
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, explained that the basis of the new resolution was the report of the IAEA Director General Amano with final assessments of urgent questions on the Iranian nuclear program, which confirmed that Iran is fulfilling all its obligations under the roadmap that was agreed between Iran and the IAEA on July 14th in Vienna.
Zakharova paid attention to the fact that, a few years ago, the main, leading capitals of the world completely seriously discussed a forceful solution to the Iranian nuclear program. “Russia strongly supported a political-diplomatic way of resolving this problem. Today we are witnessing the triumph of the forces of international law and diplomacy, which can solve even the most difficult situations. But it is terrible to imagine what would have happened if the viewpoint of the military solution to this issue prevailed then. The consequences would be catastrophic both for the region, and for the world,” Zakharova stated.
The Russian Foreign Ministry thinks this is a perfect example of common sense, as well as for new world global issues. It is to have common sense, based on international law, as well as with the understanding that forceful methods can actually lead to disastrous results.
