“Peoples are not born nationalists.” Who benefits from the Karabakh war?

The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has urged the sides of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict to prevent a new escalation of the confrontation in Nagorno-Karabakh, noting that NATO supported efforts by the OSCE Minsk Group. “The sides must come back to the negotiating table and find a full-scale settlement. The conflict has no military settlement,” the NATO Secretary General said. Recall that on the night of April 2nd all the border positions of Azerbaijan were shelled from large-caliber weapons, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and guns of the Armenian Armed Forces. In addition, a number of shots were fired at settlements near the frontline, densely populated by civilians. As a result of the shooting, there soldiers and civilians have been killed. As time goes by, more and more people understand the absurdity of the war. Vestnik Kavkaza presents an article by the Network of Independent Journalists epress.am.

Peoples are not born nationalists; nationalism is spread by the regime: senseless and vulgar poems, a punitive army and demands for xenophobia, after which patriotism stinks like a military barrack in my head.

“The Turk is glad!” our insane corrupt commander would shoute
at our troops on the square in the morning, when he informed us about a suicide or a murder in a military unit, and then he abused the dead soldiers with the worst obscene words. Sometimes he called a ‘defaulter’, beat him on the legs and shouted: “A Turk, take this Turk to the guardhouse.”

The everyday cowardly, vulgar selfishness which crawls into our conscious and subconscious from the media, chauvinism beyond which the reality of the world is not important and cannot have importance in our national reality, whatever is going on there. Hatred, xenophobia, and militarism are directly and indirectly presented to the people as common daily food, and in the end national vanity and hatred completely substitute in people’s heads for the ability to think critically or stay a human being.

Whomakes the awful propaganda machine work and for the sake of what? Who wants the fire of hatred and war to go on?

The answer is obvious for a conscious which gets rid of the educational and propaganda rubbish: hatred and war are always stirred up and created by the national and supranational political and business elite and service class and the personal interests of the national and supranational elites.

Money and power, there is nothing else. Money means safe storage of incomes, new sources of revenues, including the military industry or the military budget, multiplication of revenues and power, safe power preservation, reproduction and improvement. There is the US elite at the top of the pyramid with its great military and industrial complex, structures which are acting at its order – NATO, the World Bank, IMF, the UN, and so on. And only after them, the elites of countries like the EU, China, and Russia are coming, and the elites of the Third World countries are at the bottom of the pyramid.

How does it work?

Legitimizing social inequality, exploitation and the suppression of the people lead to fair people’s protests and revolutionary flashes. To weaken and control these protests, the elites which fear the establishment of democracy regularly inject the poison, the drug of nationalism and xenophobia. However, from time to time, when the injection seems to work poorly, the elite revives wars, encouraging the lowest, animalist instincts of a human, digging common sense and elementary humanism into nationalistic hysteria.

(There is more good news, a press secretary of the national elite reports, one more tank has been destroyed. And thousands of people like the post and enjoy violence).

And what should we do? They are shooting at us, occupying the territory, shouldn’t we defend ourselves?

Of course we should defend, but the goal is to stop the war and prevent its new start – the elimination of reasons for hatred. The wave of hatred and indignation in favor of prevention of wars and social revolution should be directed not against the people and soldiers of a neighboring country, who just like us are zombified by propaganda of hatred, as the elites and the top circles of the two countries have planned; the wave of indignation should be directed at one target – the national and supranational elites, who are the only guilty and interested side, they are guilty of the insane bloodshed of war and social injustice.

Yes, we should defend, but we should admit that the only responsible force is the ruling elites, we should talk about this all the time. Instead of calling for revenge against a soldier of the opponent, our angry should be directed at the true initiators – the generals and presidents who are stirring up the war and the world elite who are manipulating their actions. Without this understanding, we will stay timid executors of a scenario which has been developed for us from above. Instead of militarist urging to revenge, to turn 1 into 1000 (someone has commented on a post on a solder killed at the front on Facebook: ‘Let God turn 1 [victim] into 1000’), we should think about the opportunity to make Armenian and Azerbaijani soldiers brothers on the battlefield.
