Russia-Iran: a natural partnership

US Secretary of State John Kerry recently said that if Russia and Iran continue to support Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, then it is precisely Moscow and Tehran that would be a problem for Washington. "If Russia and Iran stand as a unit and allow Assad simply to doom the process to failure, we will know who is the problem. In this case, we will have fewer options for action, and we will be faced with a difficult choice. Because we cannot allow such developments. It threatens the security of the United States and all the countries in Europe,’’ Kerry said.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Caspian Cooperation Institute, the Vice Chairman of the editorial board of Vestnik Kavkaza, the political analyst Sergei Mikheyev, believes that the Russian-Iranian cooperation is natural: "It seems to me, very sorry, an unfortunate fact that for many years this cooperation was in a, so to speak, semi-frozen state. For various reasons, including for reasons of some external influence, which is also present, this, I think we need to say clearly. All the sorts of anti-Iranian lobbies outside of Russia, and even inside, in general they break, in my opinion, quite consciously, the relations with this country. At the same time, I am confident that there is simply no alternative to a strategic partnership with Iran, or at least a mutually beneficial partnership "

Firstly, Mikheev believes in the future cooperation in the Caspian Sea: "We have the common Caspian area. I believe that Russia and Iran are historically in this space and bear a serious responsibility. I am sure that Russia and Iran may be precisely those countries that should be the guarantors of security in the region, the guarantors that third forces would not invade it, the various geopolitical experimenters, the number of which is pretty large in the modern world. "

The second thing, according to the expert, it is necessary to develop infrastructure projects, in particular transport corridor ‘North-South’, which could be an interesting area of logistics. The development of our cooperation in other infrastructure projects is insufficient as well.

The third, although Moscow and Tehran ‘’has  a a competitive component in the oil and gas trade, we can find interesting projects in the oil and gas industry for everyone, because this is an area where we want to bang our heads together. I think that our heads will bang, it is necessary to be ready for this, but I'm sure we can find a mutually beneficial compromise, including on the basis of  general, political and, perhaps, even ideological views. And if we talk about ideology, I am sure that Russia and Iran are countries that are not interested in the unipolar dominance of the United States in the world,’’  Mikheev said.

In addition, in his opinion, the current situation in the Middle East  threatens directly the security of Iran and Russia. "Iran is adjacent to the region and in any case has been embroiled in this situation for a long time. Russia, in my opinion, in general, did the right thing, trying to stop the threat in the distant approaches, as we say. In this case, Iran is also our completely natural ally . Nevertheless, the cooperation between Iran and Russia, it seems, may be a point that all kinds of players will have to take into account, including destructive ones, including the  destructive. The terrorism could be defeated long ago, if we conducted a fair game. And, in fact, we see that almost all play double, triple games. As for the Americans and their allies, they openly deceive everyone, using the chaos of the situation to their advantage. I hope that there will be a fair partnership between Russia and Iran. And I hope it is already formed. And this fair partnership is a key to success", Mikheyev said.
