The Project Syndicate analytical publication wrote about the new world order. After Russia joined the military action in Syria, it became clear that the geopolitical structure of the world is in transition. For the Europeans, it is time to indulge in wishful thinking and understand who is an ally to them, and who only exacerbates an already difficult situation. In contrast to the US, continental Europe is not an island, but the western end of the Eurasian land mass, which is adjoined by the Middle East and North Africa. Rather than rely on the US leadership, the European Union should pay attention to Russia and its efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East that will certainly affect Europe as a whole.
To date, the transatlantic impact remains unchanged for Europe, while relations with Russia are built around efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and to prevent the development of the crisis in the Balkans. However, more and more European leaders are inclined to the need to resume and expand economic ties with Russia. If the Chinese draft of a new Silk Road through Central Asia and Russia to Europe will be successfully implemented, the EU will be able to have Moscow as a permanent and reliable partner. At the same time, this choice may lead to a deterioration of relations with the US, as the EU is necessary to the US to implement its foreign policy as a deterrent to Russian influence.
If Brussels still makes a choice in favor of Moscow, the US will lose leverage not only strategically, but also economically. That is why the policy of anti-Russian propaganda is still so relevant for the American leadership. As long as Europe is ‘afraid’ of its powerful neighbor, the US has a chance to influence the European Community. However, European leaders are already facing many challenges, such as the migrant crisis and the deteriorating economic situation. To date, the only country that can provide effective assistance to Europe is Russia. Not only the fate of the European continent depends on the choice of Brussels, but also the geopolitical situation in the world as a whole.
The US publication US News & World Report wrote about the attempts by the US to establish relations with Iran. The administration of President Barack Obama has still not given up attempts to convince the Iranian leadership of the need for bilateral cooperation. As a final step, the United States invited the Islamic Republic to participate in global negotiations on the Syrian issue and is even willing to reconsider its attitude toward Bashar al-Assad.
But Iran's position is unchangeable – the current Syrian president should stay in office. However, the main problem for the US is that Tehran is hostile to the West and is not going to cooperate with the United States to address regional issues.
Iran chose Russia as an ally and a partner, joining Moscow in a major military operation in Syria, thus stressing once again that any relationship with the United States have no value to the Iranian leadership. From a strategic point of view, the United States lost by signing the nuclear deal with Iran and received nothing in return. However, sooner or later, the unbalanced US foreign policy would lead to such results. It is impossible to intervene in the affairs of a country and then count on its support. The lesson is that you reap what you sow.
