First visit to Baku - 2

Of course we saw little of Azerbaijan. We saw only Baku and its
suburbs in the Apsheron Valley. However, it was enough for a first
impression.

The capital of Azerbaijan left many sweet memories. In comparison with
Moscow, this city of 2 million residents seems to be a little cozy
town. Here, as in any ancient city, various epochs and architectural
styles are mingled. The brightest example is the historic centre of
the city near the Maiden's Tower. The tower is an ancient monument,
construction of which began in the early Middle Ages. Near it are
situated the women's baths, built in the Modern Age and a house built
in the early XX century. Right next to the tower a modern complex of
three skyscrapers has been erected.

Here and there billboards with Heydar Aliyev and his speeches can be
seen. It is a special tradition of political power. However, you soon
understand that it is not an inclination to despotism or addiction to
a strong hand, but rather sincere gratitude to a man who had the
courage to take power into his hands in a difficult period of his
country’s life, ended the war in Karabakh and established the basis
for the current prosperity of his state.

A strong impression is provided by the main graveyard of Baku, where
Heydar Aliyev, Muslim Magomayev and other well-known Azerbaijani
people are buried. Perfect order is experienced here. It is clearly
planned. Many beautiful trees and flowers grow here.

The Azeris are a very good-hearted people. After our performance one
of local cinema workers came backstage and told us about his
impressions of our concert and his experience, spoke about Baku and
other things. He acted like we were his old friends. An incredible
person!

I can’t help but talk about the hospitality of our hosts. They did
their best to please us. We were fed like prize turkeys. By the end of
the trip, which lasted only four days, some of us couldn’t even look
at food. A profound bow to our free-hearted hosts, who have opened a
door to a real Eastern fairy tale for us.
