Theatre in Chechnya

In spite of the economic crisis, the cultural life in the Republic of Chechnya is developing quite successfully. Theatrical art is no exception. According to the republic's minister of culture, Dikalu Musakaeva, local authorities are trying to support talented artists.

Theatre has always been popular in Chechnya. Last year, the “Serlo” youth theatre was opened in Grozny and today there is a project to open a new theatre for a young audience. In addition to the Nuradilov State Drama Theatre, local officials plan to erect a new building for the Lermontov Russian Drama Theatre.

The Russian Drama Theatre was opened in Grozny in 1938. In 1941 it was named after the outstanding Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov. During the Great Patriotic War the theatre was evacuated to Siberia for two years.  The Russian Drama Theatre’s main aim is to help its audience become acquainted with the traditions of Russian classical literature and to help different people understand each other.
