Anyone who has touched upon the world of Turkmen music knows the name of Nury Halmammedov, one of the brightest people in the constellation of classical Turkmen composers. It is hard to overestimate his art in Turkmen national culture. In many cases today, the eternal works of Halmammedov are the carte de visite of Turkmenistan.

That is why many modern performers return to his art again and again. True connoisseurs of classical music in Turkmenistan and abroad appreciate any opportunity to enjoy the magical sounds of his works.

Music enthusiasts organized a memorial evening for the great Turkmen composer in Moscow. Mamed Guseynov, a composer and performer, Darya Rubanova, a professional soloist, and Maya Klycheva, a teacher of Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Russian Foreign Ministry, prepared a program of Nury Halmammedov’s pieces and ballads.

True connoisseurs of Turkmen music gathered at the gallery of Zurab Tsereteli. Classic Turkmen composers are rare at Moscow concert halls today. The presence of the composer’s widow Gulsultan Kluchevna added a special atmosphere to the meeting, describing her memories about Nury.

Young pianist and composer Mamed Guseynov performed the “Sounds of Dutar” piece. It was written by the author in his student years. The young composer dedicated the “Sounds of Dutar” to Turkmen dutarist Mylly Tachmuradov. Judges chaired by Aram Khachaturyan awarded a special honorary certificate to Nury Halmammedov at the All-Union Contest of Young Composers in Moscow in 1962. The architectonics of the national music allows the piece to stay original and fresh today. No wonder the “Sounds of Dutar” is part of the repertoire of many bright performers all over the world.

Ballads and musical pieces performed that evening demonstrated that the art of Halmammedov never lost its freshness and topicality, it contains the ideas, feelings and dreams of its creator, the soul of the nation.

The composer’s talent is extremely diverse. Not a single aspect of musical art was left untouched by his pen: music for symphony orchestra, ballet, chamber instrumental and vocal symphonic works, pieces for different instruments. Vocal cycles for the words of Makhtumkuli, Mollanepes, folk singers and poets of the 19th century, Sergey Yesenin, Heinrich Heine and Japanese poets made him famous far beyond Turkmenistan.

His music has been heard in over 20 classic Turkmen films (“Competition,” “Final Step,” “Secrets of Mukam,” “Kechpelek,” “Mukhtumkuli” and others). They made the films emotionally deeper and saturated, opened the psychological subtext of actions, becoming a full-fledged hero of the story.

The art heritage of Nury Halmammedov, in the best traditions of the national and world musical culture, continues to live and excite generations of musicians and music connoisseurs.

The success inspired the organizers of the musical evening in Moscow to continue working on his concerts. Perhaps music fans in Moscow will get new invitations for the music of Nury Halmammedov.
