Three ecological problems of Stavropol

Environmentalists are concerned about waste, water pollution and fires

For the fifth time, Stavropol Territory is hosting an ecological campaign entitled "Save the Nature of Stavropol.” The participants of the event are gathering trash and planting trees. Although the assessment of the ecological situation is characterized as favorable by the regional government, there are a number of issues which heavily concern environmentalists.

The first problem is continuing waste production. Sixteen waste-processing factories are to appear in the region. More than 80% of the total air pollution is produced by vehicle emissions.

Secondly, environmentalists are worried about the condition of water in the region. In general, water quality in the region is ranked third class in water qualification and is characterized as "moderately polluted". However, the basin of the river Kuma, the Terek-Kuma channel and Chograysky reservoir are marked as "polluted". The exception is the water in the Sengiley reservoir.

Thirdly, colossal damage to the ecological situation in the region is caused by the burning of land and by landscape fires.
