River energy will turn into electricity
The president of Dagestan, Magomedsalam Magomedov said at a session of "RusHydro" that Dagestan, while it possesses 50% of the energy resources of the North Caucasian Federal District, does not produce enough power for itself. Only about 10-12% of the water resources of Dagestan are used. The head of the Dagestani department of "RusHydro", Timur Gamzatov, added that Dagestani hydro-generation produced more than 60% of all the water power of the North Caucasus. Moreover, the department has become an important tax revenue, with 750 million
roubles paid into the republic’s budget. Gamzatov also proposed building hydroelectric power stations on the river Samur with Azerbaijani investment. He also foresees that this will provide a solution to the problem of supplying both states with water. He said that all the necessary conditions would be created for investors. In addition, he wants Dagestani industries to participate in production of the equipment for the hydroelectric power stations.
There has also been talk about finishing construction of the Gotsatlin hydroelectric station on the Andiyskoye Koysu river. The first part of the station will start functioning in 2012 (with a power capacity of 100 megawatts) and the second part, which will be started later, will increase the station’s output to 800 megawatts. 6 more stations will then be constructed on the river, with a total power output of 944.4 megawatts.

Crisis has helped private housing
Falling prices for construction materials caused growth in private housing construction. For example, cement prices are now 50% lower. This has hastened the construction of private houses. 14% more houses were built in Dagestan this year than last year. 80% of the new houses are private.
"Rosstat" ascertains growth
The state is ordering less from Dagestani factories, leading to fewer jobs. The large factory "Electrosignal" did not receive any orders from the state last year, so over 300 workers had to take a vacation. Only two industries have maintained a positive dynamic - the institute "Sapfir" and the Izberbash radio factory.
But there are still branches of the economy not influenced by the crisis. According to the statistics, production increased 111% in 2009 to compared to 2008.
