Dagestan will be a transport-logistics center of Azerbaijani-Russian strategic cooperation in the development of the North-South transport corridor. This was announced at a forum in Makhachkala, where businessmen from Azerbaijan and the North Caucasus discussed prospects for cooperation and the competitive advantages of the implementation of regional projects in the sphere of trade, energy and tourism. The state structures are developing an international legal basis for these projects.

The forum was held within the framework of Baku agreements between President Ilham Aliyev and plenipotentiary envoy of the president of Russia in the NCFD Alexander Khloponin. 45 Azerbaijani businessmen, heads of the state structures, who manage economic cooperation with the NCFD, visited Dagestan. Ahead of the forum the head of Dagestan, Magomedsalam Magomedov, met the head of the Azerbaijani delegation, the minister of economic development of Azerbaijan, Shakhin Mustafayev. Mustafayev stated that Azerbaijani companies intensively cooperate with partners in the North Caucasus in the sphere of trade. For example, BASF exports chemical products from Dagestan, Bismak – bread products. Elba imports meat from the region. According to the minister, today Russia takes first place in the total import volume of Azerbaijan. In 2010 year turnover between two countries was about $2 billion. By January-September 2011 turnover between Azerbaijan and Russia grew by 62.8% and accounted up to $2.1 billion.

“Since 2004 to 2010 233 companies with Russian capital were registered in Azerbaijan. In recent years Russian companies invested about $400 million to Azerbaijani economy,” Mustafayev said. According to the minister, at the moment in the North Caucasus several Azerbaijani companies function. Azerum Holding has built the tea production plant in the Stavropol Territory. By the end of the year the holding plans to open a can fabric. Karat Holding established the affiliated enterprise Agroleader in Stavropol.

The company ANT Inshaat has constructed the education building for 1000 students of Derbent branch of Azerbaijani State Economy University, and the vocational school with 300 places and the sporting hall. The company Caspian Service is constructing residential buildings in Yessentuki and Stavropol through its affiliated enterprise StroyService.

Development of transport points connecting Azerbaijan and Russian Dagestan confirms an improvement in economic cooperation. In the Magaramket district of Dagestan construction of customs terminals is being implemented. The work should be completed by 2012, after which the capacity of the Yarag-Kazmalyar customs post will grow. The project is being implemented with the participation of private capital.

Azerbaijan and Dagestan plan to implement projects on construction of hydro-electric power stations on the Samur River. Along with accumulation of water resources for electricity generation, the dams of these hydro-electric power stations will fulfil amelioratory functions.
