On January 21, as part of the Gaidar Forum there will be held an international conference called "Russia and the world: 2012-2020". Participants will discuss the social and economic development of Russia. The tradition of annual forums was created by Egor Gaidar.
The forum will be devoted to general problems of economic growth, economic policy, as well as macroeconomic and sociopolitical issues, the rector of the Academy of national economy and civil service under the government of the Russian Federation Vladimir Mau told. The separate attention will be given a global economic crisis. He also noticed that the «turbulent decade» wouldn’t let him take the issue of the agenda till 2020.
According to Mau, the Gaidar Forum is of applied character. It is held for practising economists writing articles and the books and involved in consultations between the governments of Russia and other countries. Well-known practising economists, including some experts of world-wide reputation, such as Jeffrey Sachs and William Bauter will form the core of the forum. Mau defined the main aim of the forum as «positive expert discussion».
Timing of the forum coincides with the end of work of expert groups "Strategies-2020". “This strategy presupposes the presence of scenarios within the limits of reason. It is not a program for the government. It is a source of options, although it is theoretically consistently implementable”, Mau explains. The document touches on pension reform, tax policy, macroeconomic stability and other issues. Prospects of implementation of "Strategies-2020" will depend on requests of the country leaders and society. “The government has requested about expert work out of the new strategy of development in 2010, the society did it in late 2011," Mau says.
Conference will be held in the form of plenary discussions and expert round tables. The participants will have a chance to state and discuss their understanding of key tendencies and challenges of innovative development and modernization of the country. Heads of subjects of the Federation, as well as Russian and foreign economists and public figures, have complied to conduct plenary discussions and act as representatives of the government in their course.
