Former top managers of the company charged
The former CEO of “Ros GruzEnergo” Georgy Sheradze and his deputy, Shota Maisuradze, were detained recently by the Investigation Department of the Georgian Ministry of Finance. They are accused of misappropriation of funds and face up to 7 years in jail if found guilty.
According to the information available to the investigatory bodies, Sharadze and Maisuradze misappropriated $1.1 million out of $4.5 million the company was given by the government of Georgia.
The “RosGruzEnergo” company was founded in 1996 by the Georgian Ministry of Energy and RAO UES, with each party having 50%. The company was intended to export energy from Russia into Georgia,
That is a strong possibility that the arrest has a political background. Soon after the Rose Revolution of 2003, the new administration became suspicious of Sharadze and Maisuradze - in particular their pasts in pre-revolutionary Georgia. The suspects' lawyers have made no comment.
