The massive construction for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games has already
begun, but builders and architects express doubts as to whether this
"construction of the century" is necessary. The main buildings are
constructed in the Imeretin Valley, the most picturesque part of the
resort. "Even in the 1960s it was a really great temptation to start
building in the valley, but we decided to preserve its natural
beauty", said the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Communist
Party in Sochi in the 50s - 70s, Vyacheslav Voronkov.
Two years ago the organizers of the Olympic project in Sochi were
criticized for the lack of control of the construction. Many skeptics
believe that nothing has changed since then. The organizers stress
that the infrastructure built for the Olympics will be useful for the
city and its citizens. 183 different infrastructural objects are now
being modernized, according to the local authorities, and all of this
will make Sochi a world-class resort.
However, these constructions are rather costly. Only in Sochi itself
the construction of the new roads cost 15 billion rubles and the
improvement of the infrastructure around the city will cost 100
billion rubles. Expenses are not the only problem. Law suits have
become quite common. Local authorities have started legal actions
against both individuals and enterprises that are not willing to give
up their land for Olympic construction. These cases are often very
complicated and involve prominent businessmen and the court tries them
for a long time.
