Georgian deputies have recognized the events of the Caucasian war as a genocide of the Circassian people on the eve of the commemoration day of the Caucasian War. Radical Circassian organizations received the news with great enthusiasm.
The subjects of the federation, populated by Adygeys, Kabardians, Circassians and Shapsugs, all of whom who consider themselves to be different peoples, found themselves in a difficult situation. On the one hand, nowadays one cannot talk about a genocide existing at a federal level while on the other hand, for example, in Karachay-Cherkessia May 21 is the official Day of Commemoration of the Caucasian War.
The head of Kabardino-Balkaria, Arsen Kanokov commented on this event with the following statement: "In modern conditions it is extremely important to find how to connect the values of the traditional culture and mentality of the Circassians with universal interests of the modernization processes, based on serious scientific analysis. Only this will allow our nations to solve the most important task: to preserve their national and cultural identity and integration amid global processes."
Today, the majority of Circassians live outside the Caucasus. The Circassian diaspora, according to various estimates, amounts to from 5 to 8 million people and is scattered in more than 50 countries.
