Abkhaz election campaign reaches its climax

Abkhaz election campaign reaches its climax
The early election campaign in Abkhazia is now reaching its climax

The Republican party, headed by Raul Khadjimba, declared its intention to nominate its candidate to the post of president. It is quite probable that the party’s leader will be proposed as this candidate. Another key player in this election campaign is Sergey Shamba, who declared his intention to run for the office in an interview.

In the same interview Shamba shed some light on another important issue. He confirmed the possibility of the simultaneous participation of two candidates from the currently governing party: Shamba himself and acting President Ankwaba will be competing for the post.

The nomination of candidates will end on July 17, but until then a lot of surprises might shake Abkhaz political life. Meanwhile, despite all the promises of a fair competition, the struggle has already begun and it is threatening to destabilize the situation in the Republic. Destabilization is certainly desired by Georgia, which will exercise all possible means, including provocations, to achieve it.

Sukhumi officials are well aware of the situation. The Abkhaz Parliament addressed the nation on June 8, asking it to maintain civil peace and reason during the elections, thus demonstrating that Abkhazia is a civilized, democratic state.

Only time will tell whether this appeal is to have an effect. Abkhaz society has enough strength to maintain stability, and Russia is genuinely interested in it too.
