Iranian Foreign Ministry's official representative on Arab Spring

The tense environment around Iran, connected with Washington’s accusations against Tehran of plotting to murder the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the US, made the authorities of Iran strengthen their foreign policy. The official representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Head of the Public Diplomacy and Mass Media Center, Ramin Mehmanparast, arrived in Moscow to improve the situation.
The Iranian official met his Russian colleagues and promised to carry out unofficial meetings with heads of the Russian media, scientists, experts in the sphere of mass media and specialists from the Oriental Studies Center.

“Today we are witnessing major changes in the political scene of the Middle East and North Africa. Both our countries face the same global problems, so mutual consultation could prove extremely helpful. The level of our current relations is very high and we should take all opportunities to make it even higher. I hope this visit will contribute to this objective,” Mehanparast said.

Then the official spoke about the Arab Spring and criticized Washington’s policy: “Up until now, the world had been divided into two poles – the East and the West. And the political decisions of the countries of both camps were made with regard to this division. After the collapse of the USSR, the USA and other Western countries decided that everything was ready for establishing a uniform, mono-polar world. So their policy in the Middle East was aimed at subjecting the region’s people to their will. The region of the Middle East has always been very sensitive. One of the reasons is economic – the enormous energy reserves. The other is political and ideological – most sacred Muslim sites are situated here. Americans with the help of their allies tried to rearrange the whole geopolitical structure of the region by supporting rulers loyal to them for decades. We haven’t observed much political progress here over the past 30-40 years. So the rift between the peoples and their governments grew deeper, the people were totally deprived of power. The leaders didn’t even try to observe the countries’ national interests, while serving their Western masters.
33 years ago, one of these states, namely Iran, rose against its imposed ruler and claimed its rightful independence. This revolution was a disaster for the USA, so that is why they have been trying to intimidate and destroy us for all these 33 years. The USA tries to plant seeds of conflict between different Iranian ethnic groups, such as Azerbaijanis, Persians, Arabs, Kurds, etc… They also tried the religious aspect by trying to cause Shia and Sunni to quarrel. But all these mischievous manipulations failed.”
“So why does the US hate us so much only for our desire for independence? It tries to demonstrate the deplorable consequences of such a desire to other countries of the region. But again the West failed and the peoples of the Middle East learned how to fight for their freedom against imposed tyrants. This movement, that we call the Islamic Revival, has its roots and its example in Iran, which managed to overcome all difficulties on the way to its freedom. So who benefits from these changes, and who loses? If the region's peoples become masters of their countries again, if they become independent, that would mean a defeat for the West. The peoples fight for their freedom with dictators, and each fallen dictatorial regime is a lost stronghold for Western imperialists.”

After this, Mehmanparast commented on Iranian-Turkish relations: “Iran and Turkey are neighbors and close partners, as well as two leading powers in the region. We have a long history of cooperation and a big common cultural heritage. But there is as yet unexplored potential in our relations, as we believe that all strong states of the region should work together to ensure stability and to fight the mischievous plans of the West. It is necessary to understand that the West is trying to destabilize the region and destroy the very notion of security, to create conflicts – that is the only way they can support the Zionist regime. Each conflict in the region is of great profit to the West, so the people of the region should stand up and oppose them.”
