Nuclear dossier and international relations of Iran
“Russia considers sanctions against Iran as depleted, the problem should be solved by diplomatic measures,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on November 14th. “Punishment leads nowhere. Isolation and confrontation approach is not effective for Iran.” He meant the nuclear program of Iran, which is accused by West of development of nuclear armament under covering of the peaceful atom program. Tehran denies these accusations.

Recently the deputy secretary of the Supreme Council of National Security of Iran Ali Bagiri has visited Moscow. He expressed his views on information space, in which Iran has found itself after publication of the IAEA report on nuclear armament in the world.

Iran considers this report by the IAEAto be a purely political one. “Four years ago the IAEA posed us some questions and we answered to all of them in a 117 page report. We consider the conclusions of the IAEA Director General to be illegal. The IAEA accuses us without properly studying the issue,” Bagiri said.

He demonstrated the letter, which says that the IRI is ready to explain to the IAEA any unexplained issues. However, the general director of the IAEA didn’t even mention the letter from Iran, in which we asked him to postpone publishing the report before being enlightened on all issues. According to Bagiri, the documents, which the IAEA presented as evidence that Iran is ignoring them or documents on probable research are fake and were falsified in the USA. “It is odd that the USA still hasn’t given these documents to either the IAEA or Iran. Why don’t they show Iran the documents? Because they are fake. We don’t consider the report legal. Many countries of the world protested against such behavior of the general director of the IAEA. The case is so serious that the authorities of the Russian Federation expressed their official position on the report. Russia considers this report to be unobjective and political. China has taken the same position,” Ali Bagiri noted.

The speech by Bagiri at the press-conference was traditional for Iran, which always denies authorities of the West and contradicts the USA. Commenting on the situation on information attack to Iran, Ali Bagiri stated that just like in the case of Iraq, the Americans are deliberately falsifying evidence. However, he admitted that “today’s US isn’t the same that it used to be 10 years ago. We believe that the US today is as weak as it has ever been in a long time. The US is facing a great deal of economic and social difficulties now. And today’s Iran can’t be compared to the Iraq of those times: Iran is a powerful state, and it is a democratic state.”

As for the US policy toward Syria, Ali Bagiri said that the US is applying a double-standards approach towards Syria: in Syria the Americans support the opposition, while in Bahrain they don’t grant the opposition any support.”

He touched upon relations between Iran and Russia and noted that Russia and Iran are enjoying a strategic partnership, so the countries consult each other on a wide spectrum of issues on a regular basis. He also commented on the current situation at the Busher plant: “Iran counts on nuclear power and that is why our Parliament made the government construct nuclear power plants that would provide 20,000 megawatts of energy.”

As for Egypt, Ali Bagiri said that Iranian Foreign Ministry attributes a great deal of importance to these relations. However, at the moment Egypt is preoccupied with its internal problems – they have to organize a whole series of elections – and these questions are more urgent to them than those of international relations.

As for Saudi Arabia, Bagiri said that two countries have normal relations. There is always room for misunderstandings and disagreements between any countries. Iran disapproves of Saudi Arabia’s actions when it sent its military contingent to Bahrain.  However, Saudi Arabia is the country where the two holiest places for Muslims are located, and more than 100,000 Iranian citizens go there for Hajj every year.

“Iran is a democracy, a new model of democracy – a religious one. So there is no point in trying to interpret our internal events in Western terms and criteria. Maybe this is the reason why America has been losing all its battles against us in the last 30 years: they have been trying to judge us according to their own standards. Our society is very active in politics: you could have observed that during the latest presidential elections. As for the Iranian nuclear program, even those opposition activists that live abroad support the Iranian government on this particular issue,” Bagiri noted.
