On August 26 South Ossetia marked the fourth anniversary of the republic’s recognition by Russia. During four days of the August war in 2008 the sides were accusing each other of aggression, and Tbilisi spoke about possible resumption of hostilities. At the same time, it is clear the war wasn’t beneficial either for Russia or Georgia or especially South Ossetia.
“It is important for the Georgian side to sign a document on non-use of force against South Ossetia and Abkhazia. We are talking about it for the fourth year, but they don’t want to sign,” President of South Ossetia, Leonid Tibilov, have stated recently. At the same time, he has recalled consolidation of South and North Ossetias: “Ossetia was divided by some decision during the USSR forming… In a prospect the republic will be consolidated within Russia.”
The same view is shared by Russian people. According to the poll by Levada-Center, a number of citizens who think that South Ossetia should be included into Russia increased in comparison with 2011. 35% Russian citizens agree with the view, while last year there were only 25% of them.
Meanwhile, Russia and South Ossetia continue to implement the program on reconstruction of the republic. At the recent meeting in Tskhinvali between Tibilov and the deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council, Rashid Nurgaliyev, the president of South Ossetia expressed his satisfaction with the level of mutual understanding between the authorities of the countries: “Our activities are directed at our desire to make our people feel care by the state. There is a progress in this direction, and we don’t plan to stop,” Tibilov emphasized. At the moment, the head of the republic continues personnel shuffles in the government. Recently Alla Chociyeva was appointed to the deputy minister of health and social development.
The position of the deputy chairman of the Committee on Migration Policy of the RSO was given to Igor Chochiyev. Gennady Bekoyev became the deputy chairman of the Committee on Standardization of Metrology. Batradz Kabulov was appointed to the position of the deputy head of the Forest Management Department. South Ossetia tries to compose an effective government and demonstrate the evolution of its post-war development and following the course of cooperation with Russia.
