At the Tehran summit of the Non-Aligned Movement a group for settlement of the Syrian crisis was established and the Iranian nuclear program was supported. International experts paid close attention to this fact, as the non-aligned countries have a great energy potential: they own 76% of world oil resources (53% of produced oil) and 66% of world gas resources (39% of produced gas).
Rajab Safarov, the head of the Contemporary Iran Studying Center, thinks that “the summit might determine the world’s fate. It was the largest international forum which might change the world politics significantly. For many countries the Tehran forum became a hope for changing the situation within international processes. The main point is that they have gained certain hope for justice restoring. The summit was attended by numerous heads of states and envoys of many countries.
The West headed by the US and Israel tried to prevent this summit from holding, at least from wide media coverage. They proposed many countries benefits, pressed on some leaders and even blackmailed them. However, a lot of them thought about their interests, first of all, interests of peoples, countries; so they came to Tehran. We remember what powerful pressure was imposed on the UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon. They had such arguments: how can you go the country which is under sanctions of the UN SC and doesn’t fulfill its resolutions? It was the main American argument who pressed on many leaders of the monarchies of the Persian Gulf, leaders of Arab countries who consider positions of the West and the US during decision-making. But the aides of Ban Ki-moon understood that if he didn’t come to the forum, the UN would definitely collapse. If he didn’t go to Tehran, it would mean the end of his career as a political activist. It would show that the UN is not an international structure, but a hand gear controlled by the US and some other states. And they say: “Don’t go there,” and he doesn’t go. At a last moment he realized that it might be the most serious forum for recent decades. He went to Tehran, even though he felt uncomfortable there. He knew that many acute issues of international politics would be discussed there, including those on reforming this structure. Many forces were interested in Tehran’s isolation from the world processes which would prove that Iran has no political weight in geopolitics. But the Tehran summit proved that the place and importance of the state in settlement of local and global problems are huge. Many countries came to Tehran to express solidity to Iran and support it. Of course it wasn’t the main reason for coming to the forum. They came to Tehran because they get tired of oppression, pressure, unfair politics, and ignoring of their interests. The concluding resolution of the summit contains more than 700 articles. The most important decisions which were adopted in Tehran are recognition that countries of the international society have a right for development of nuclear energy. Believe me, it is almost impossible for Tehran to influence 120 countries for they support the Iranian nuclear program. Each of them has its own opinion and can absolutely clearly define it, just like Egyptian President Muhammed Mersi did. The second important decision adopted at the summit was activation of the UN reforming. Everybody thinks that we cannot live like that anymore. Everybody agreed that the UN structure has to be changed as soon as possible – its status, essence, and the form of the Security Council. 120 countries, 2/3 of the international society, members of the UN decided it. It is impossible to ignore this decision.”
