Israeli sources confirmed The New York Times’ reports that Israel’s efforts prevented Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from using chemical weapon against rebels. According to the Israeli observers, the main point of the story is that the international society is able to prevent threats to humanity.
It is reported that in late 2012 experts of Israel Defense Forces watched through photos made by an Israeli satellite over the Syrian territory and noticed Syrian soldiers who mixed some chemical agents. It was suggested that soldiers were preparing sarin which is a chemical weapon.
The information was sent to the US, Russia, and Turkey (despite the crisis in relations between the countries). It is noted that this time Russia, China, and the US were consolidated and warned Assad that usage if chemical weapon would make an end of the international society’s patience. Several weeks later the Pentagon reported that “Assad understood the message” and would hardly decide to cross the line.
Israel continues following the developments in Syria and doesn’t understand why the international society doesn’t express indignation about dozen thousand casualties in the country, including hundred Palestinians. At the same time, death of several militants of terrorist organizations in Gaza becomes a subject for investigation in the UN.
