Why is Israel bombing Syria?

Israel has fired at facilities in Damascus suburbs several times. According to the mass media, Syria is ready to attack “certain facilities” in case of a new aggression. Russian experts discuss reasons for Israel’s involvement into the conflict.

“It is not the first time,” the senior scientist of the Oriental Studies Institute of the RAS, Irina Zvyagelskaya, says. “Israel has already fired at Syrian territory, explaining it that it bombed a road train with an armament headed to Hezbollah. These attacks are officially explained by the fact that Israel doesn’t want Assad’s regime to supply Hezbollah with armaments, that these were Iranian missiles exported to Syria which transfers it to Hezbollah, so, this is a significant threat for Israel. Our perception on what is a threat for Israel differs from the Israeli leadership’s perception. In fact Israel had to be satisfied with Assad’s regime because it used to be a peaceful border, the regime was very predictable, it maintained the territorial integrity of Syria, and different ethnic and confessional groups used to live peacefully under the regime. It seems Assad’s regime should be much more beneficial for Israel than the opposition forces which now can appear in power, from the security point of view.

Assad’s regime will probably not respond to these attacks; it is weak and enchained by the general military situation in the country. Thus, Israel acted in favor of the opposition in Syria. All of Israel will support the Israeli government, if it hears the word “Hezbollah.” The word “Iran” threatens this country as well.”

According to the vice president of the Geopolitical Problems Academy, Denga Khalidov, “Israel implements its geopolitical project. It doesn’t completely match the visions of the Western policy. The project covers the territory to the Caucasus and includes such countries as the South Caucasus states, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and even Dagestan. This geopolitical strategy is supported by a very powerful Israeli lobby in the American establishment. There are serious studies by American scientists who prove the American foreign policy is anti-national due to influence of Israeli lobby. Neoconservatives are a bright political coalition which associates with the pro-Israeli vector of the American politics – they are called “Christian Zionists.” They are a neoconservative wing of the Republican party. On the other hand, the Israeli strategy in the region faces new movements in the State Department and the global strategy of the USA, which can be called “a line of financial internationalism.” This strategy doesn’t require a separate geopolitical strategy of Israel. Pentagon and the structures which actively support Israel pressure on Barack Obama more and more. Barack Obama and the State Department have to meet each other halfway; so, descent interference with the Syrian affairs is quite possible.”
