Ukrainian civil war to affect the EU

On Tuesday President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko decided not to prolong the cease-fire regime in the east of the country. According to him, “for 10 days we have demonstrated to Donbas, Ukraine and the whole world that we follow a peaceful way of settling the conflict which was provoked by foreign forces. We demonstrated our goodwill to the residents of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.” Poroshenko states that “protection of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the security and lives of citizens, demand not only defensive, but attacking actions against militants and terrorists. The Armed Forces, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, and the Security Service received certain orders. They are not restricted by the ceasefire regime anymore. We will attack and save our territory.”

Kiev believes that this will rescue the territory from militants and terrorists. The majority of the population of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions blame the Kiev authorities of an aggressive policy.

Kiev accuses Moscow of interference in its internal affairs, but Moscow has a different view on the situation. Sergey Glaziyev, Russian presidential aide, states that “if the majority of people want to live on their territory independently, we have to respect this choice. If the authorities in Kyiv were wise enough, they would be able to reach an agreement with the citizens of the South-Eastern part of the country. Such a dialogue would be possible in case of a federal system, either similar to the ones which exist in Germany or Canada, or their own. Such a system would allow the central authorities to cooperate with regional powers and secure the regions' cultural, linguistic and economic characteristics. However Kyiv decided to use violence. Unfortunately the United States and the European Union supported Kyiv's choice.”

According to Glazyev, the only peaceful way out of the crisis is for the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk to sign a federation agreement with the Ukrainian government, which in this case should recognize the breakaway republics as legitimate. “Another option is the recognition of the independence of these republics, as the Czech Republic and Slovakia did. The same has happened many times in Europe. Any other way would be a way of violence and war, in which more and more would have to get involved,” the Russian presidential aide says.

Speaking about signing the association agreement between the EU and the Ukrainian authorities, Sergei Glazyev noted: “This means that the EU is ready to interfere in this conflict. If Ukraine and the EU sign this agreement, this will mean that the conflict in Eastern Ukraine concerns the EU. It will mean that the EU is responsible for the crimes of the Ukrainian authorities. The US is trying to get the EU and Ukraine involved in a violent conflict. The Americans want the chaos in Eastern Ukraine to increase. They want the conflict to become even more acute. This means that the US is stoking a war in Europe as they did in North Africa, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. The US is provoking conflicts all over the world. Thus it is trying to start a new world war for its own interests.”
