Is all quiet in Western Ukraine?

By Vestnik Kavkaza

Moscow blames the West and Ukrainian nationalists for the current crisis in Russian-Ukrainian relations. It is thought that relations between Russians and Ukrainians have always been and will always be warm and friendly, and they are spoiled by those who hate Russians. Meanwhile, recent events in Ukraine, which are called a civil war, influence Western Ukraine as well. And there are preconditions for the detachment of the western regions from Ukraine. What is going on there? The director of the Political Information Centre, Alexei Mukhin, comments on the situation.

“The western regions of Ukraine have almost no people who could resist Kiev. Almost all the men are working abroad – in Russia, in Europe, and so on. So there are only women and children. Who can rebel there?

That is why the west hasn’t declared independence, like the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. That is why. But there are preconditions for the process, as Romanian and Polish special services and radicals are preparing similar separatist acts.

And their target is to occupy part of Ukrainian territory. It should be considered in European plans, as there are not only Western European plans, but also Eastern European plans.”

According to Mukhin, “Central European countries follow the processes which are going on in Ukraine attentively, they are watching the dissolution of the state. And it cannot be ignored.”

As for when Kiev comes to its senses and Ukraine is ready to turn the process toward a constructive way, Mukhin thinks “it will happen when the reanimated phenomenon of fascism does its job and returns to its source due to Molotov cocktails on the Euromaidan. I think this is the reason for people behaving weirdly and inappropriately. Of course, a powerful ideological influence is obvious on certain social active categories of the population, which are not able to agree with anyone. Whatever international mediators are involved, they will insist on their demands: who’s not jumping, he is Russian; Ukraine is Europe. Probably now Ukraine is Europe. And this step will satisfy the part of the Ukrainian population which is less dependent on influence. And the processes will become less crowded. Of course it is a positive factor, and this is the path that should be chosen.”
