It had consisted of distant shelling and raids of special troops until July 17, but the Israeli army started a ground operation in the Gaza Strip last week to destroy tunnels dug by Palestinian militants under the joint border. Over a thousand Palestinians and over 40 Israelis have died since this phase of the conflict began.
Olga Slov, deputy head of the Israeli diplomatic mission in Moscow, says that the military operation started by Israel was solely related to attacks by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip: “Until the start of the ground operation, Israel was making it clear that if Hamas stopped its attacks, Israel would have stopped all its activities; instead, the attacks kept intensifying and intensifying. On July 7, when the operation started, about 80 missiles were launched in just one day. From July 8 to July 17, when the ground operation started, about 1500 missiles were launched.”
