Tribal union wants to save Syria

Radical Islamists of the Islamic State have posted a video of U.S. journalist James Foley’s beheading. A day before the execution of Foley, Islamists said that they would kill Americans all over the world in response to U.S. air raids on their positions in Iraq. Meanwhile, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said that any unilateral actions of the U.S. against the Islamic State on the territory of Syria were violating the Security Council resolution and will be taken as aggression against the Syrian state.

The conflict in Syria has been ongoing for over three years and has recently been aggravated by active actions of the Islamic State in the region, including on the territory of the country. Different international and Syrian societies are searching for solutions to the situation. Abbas Khabib, the coordinator of the Council of Syrian Tribes, said that the organization could contribute to a peaceful settlement of the crisis.

In his words, the Council of Syrian Tribes is “the side everyone was associated with: official structures, the opposition.” We are right in the course of events, because we know what is going on there. Now, when Islamic forces have started an offensive, we have decided to form the council to represent all Syrians, not just the government or opposition. Our goal is to gather all sides behind the negotiating table,” says Abbas Khabib.

In his opinion, the tribal origins of the ancestors of every Syrian can play a decisive role. “The mosaic of Syrian society is obvious here… Half of our council consists of Christians, half of Muslims. Through consultations, we are convinced that Syrians need such mediation of the Council of Tribes, which has not been involved in any conflicts or struggle in Syria, so it can be impartial. They have not sided with the government or the armed opposition before the intervention of the Islamic State in our north-eastern districts,” assures Abbas Khabib.

The Russian side proposed organizing an inter-Syrian conference in Moscow. The coordinator of the Council of Syrian Tribes approved the proposal: “When Syrians will gather in Moscow for a preliminary consultative meeting, we will reach an agreement on a further agenda, and the inter-Syrian conference will solve other problems in the future… Now, we are making an Arab tour. After returning to Damascus, we will continue the efforts and visit other Arab states to contact tribes that could influence related forces, movements to contribute to our common efforts within the framework of the Arab world. We hope that the conference will be soon.
