Georgia vs Russia trial

Georgia vs Russia trial

On September 13th the UN International Court began hearings of the Russia-Georgia case. The Georgian side has accused Russia of violating
the 1965 International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of
Racial Discrimination. The lawsuit filed by Georgia has accused Russia
of mass murder of the Georgian inhabitants of South Ossetia.

This trial is only one part of a large-scale Georgian attack on Russia
in various international bodies. On September 7th the UN General
Assembly adopted a resolution on the status of Georgian refugees,
which was proposed by the Georgian side. According to the Georgian
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Vashadze, it was a remarkable victory
for Georgian diplomacy.

Several more cases are going to be brought before different
international courts. The European Court of Human Rights is going to
try a case concerning violation of human rights on the part of Russia
during the deportation of Georgians in 2006. Another legal action was
started because of the violation of human rights during the August war
of 2008.
