BRICS is not five countries, it is five leading civilization areas

During the G20 summit in Brisbane an informal meeting of leaders of the BRICS countries took place. The growing influence of BRICS makes experts think that in the near future the union will have greater political weight than the G7.

Vladimir Davydov, the director of the Institute of Latin America, a corresponding member of the RAS,
says that BRICS is gradually turning into a fundament of the multipolar world. He also speaks about the most beneficial strategy for the union in the very near future.

“BRICS is a young entity in the international arena. BRICS is a search. I think they need some time for development of political will and finding an adequate model of organization. BRICS is five major civilization areas. From this point of view, its importance and moral right to reconstruct the current system of global regulation are growing. These are not five ordinary countries, but five powers, five major economies, these are five leading civilization areas. I am convinced of the dynamism of the group of new centers of global economy, global politics, and we should understand that an expert in long-term forecasting cannot rely on a situation of 2-3 years. What is happening in Brazil and Russia today is a search for a new development model,” Davydov thinks.

At the same time, he believes that China has already found a response to the challenge which Russia and Brazil have faced: “Since the 18th Chinese Communist Party Congress, when many strategic guidelines were reconsidered and were implemented in the last several years, it is important to provide such cooperation within BRICS that would encourage the right choice of a development strategy in all member countries; as we should coordinate the development strategy. At the moment it should be done not individually, but collectively. Sometimes I think we consider the problem too broadly. This is an inevitable consequence of BRICS’s small age; and now it is high time for consolidation inside BRICS – consolidation of agendas, consolidation over key projects which are strategically important for all member countries.”
