The Yuzhnaya Ossetiya paper says that restoration of housing after the war of August 2008 became a priority of the complex recovery plan of the republic, using Russia’s financial aid. The reconstruction has been going according to an investment program for socio-economic development since 2011. Low financing and other problems were the cause of its slow implementation.

The Dagestanskaya Pravda paper reports that an exposition of items found during cleaning of the Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiye Canal opened at the Dagestani Center of Modern Art in Makhachkala for a week. Organizers say that the goal of the exhibition was to draw public attention to the canal. “We decided to be creative and present items retrieved from the canal as art objects, so that it would not look that terrifying,” explained Salim Nuruchiyev, the director of the exhibition hall. The exhibition consists of parallelepiped made from garbage pressed by activists of the local “I am a president’s helper” movement. Visitors may see rusty bicycles, prams, TVs, vehicle parts, tyres and other things.

People were especially interested in two water containers: one of them contained swamp-like water collected from the canal during its cleaning, the second container holds pure water. The expositions show how dirty the water was before being purified. The exhibition demonstrated photos of the cleaning process.

Magomed Magomedov, the leader of the activist group, expressed hope that the exhibition would make people treat the canal built by their grandparents with more care. He noted that not all functionaries had visited the exhibition.

The canal was cleaned in October 2014. About 23,000 cubic meters of garbage and waste were collected. Ramazan Abdulatipov noted that there had not been such an intensive cleaning of the canal since the completion of its construction in 1923.
