Gaidar Forum: political tension arouses interest

Tomorrow the annual Gaidar Forum will open in Moscow. Officials, political figures and leading economists from around the world will participate in it. The forum is thought to be one of the biggest annual international events in Russia in the sphere of economics. It has been being held since 2010. The forum has managed to become an important political and economic event in the country’s life.

According to Vladimir Mau, Rector of the Academy of National Economics and Public Administration, “the Gaidar Forum was initiated as a forum of experts, or professors, who became top officials, and top officials who became professors. Russia has an investment forum for business circles; there are forums on academic economics. Our Gaidar Forum is a forum of practical studies, people who are involved in academic science, not only economic, but also social science, and people who directly make decisions.”

Last year the forum discussed such acute questions as economic growth in the context of global changes, its potential and opportunities for effective management, risks of innovative entrepreneurship, new industrialization, contradictions between resource economies, and ambiguous consequences of modernization for the economic and socio-political development of the society.

This year traditionally on Wednesday they will discuss macroeconomics, on Thursday – industrial economics, including financial markets, on Friday – everything which is connected with human capital. Moreover, there will be a special plenary session on charity economics, in which major businessmen will participate, who are not only benefactors, but also managers of charity infrastructure; this is a new kind of activity in Russia.

This year more than 7 thousand people registered to participate in the forum. “The number of foreigners doubled. Last year there were about 250 foreign partners, this year there are more than 500 of them; the number of U.S. representatives doubled. From this point of view, it is a blessing in disguise – political tension arouses interest.”
