Initially, the Arab Spring, which has been going on for four years and has led to revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, civil war in Libya and Syria, and stresses in other countries, was considered to be a hope for positive changes. However, soon it was obvious that in the majority of countries the developments gained a negative character and threatened international security. Since spring 2011, a civil war has been taking place in Syria. Experts believe that the USA's program of training the “moderate” armed Syrian opposition could turn into an escalation of bloodshed and a growth of terrorist activity in the region.
Riad Haddad, the ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to Russia, thinks that “nothing is accidental in international politics. Certain scenarios are developed for the achievement of certain targets. Forces which provide policies on the basis of expansion, supremacy and manipulation of international revolutions, establish numerous brainstorm and research centers to outline clear plans, considering various alternatives and options for reaching goals. The Arab Spring wasn’t an Arab spring. It has been and it is now an Arab fire, a Middle Eastern storm which is destroying the region, spreading grief, murder, and bloodshed. Decades will be needed to reconstruct everything that has been destroyed during these years, especially speaking about the mentality which determines the behaviors of people and political forces, states and societies. Forces which have chosen goals are spreading their own point of view. Unfortunately, it is a foundation for the activities of many mass media – without discussion, without analysis or content.”
According to Haddad, the American goal is to prevent the appearance of an alternative pole which could disturb the American revelry which is full of challenges, dangers, direct threats to stability and security in the world. “If the NATO countries headed by the USA have turned freedom and democracy into reasons for interference in the internal affairs of the regional countries, why do they act differently in Ukraine and Bahrain, helping ruling regimes to suppress freedoms, forbid the expression of different points of view, submit legal demands by people to express their national identity, freedom of choice of a social system? How can the desire of NATO to expand to the east, reaching Russia's borders, be interpreted? Why are they so enthusiastic about providing projects on missile defense and establishing systems on a space which is vitally important for Russia?” the Syrian ambassador wonders.
According to him, an independent view on the events in the Middle East points out a growth of religious extremism, Islamic radicalism which is based on violence, terrorism, threats, murders, bloodshed. A view is imposed on people, which has nothing in common with freedom, democracy, modernity. The new rebels want to return to 1400 years ago. They think that all the achievements of human civilization are wrong.
“The mass media reports on a coalition which is established by America to fight terrorism. In fact, it is a war by means of terrorism, rather than against terrorism… Western countries don’t want to reject their colonial policy, which will fail inevitably, but only when humanity has paid too much. It means the countries which are really fighting terrorism, primarily my country, Syria, with the support of such friends as Russia and Iran, are fighting terrorism for the whole world. The double standard policy will only lead to a spread of terrorism,” Riad Haddad is sure.
