It is hard to overestimate the contribution of Sevastopol to the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Already within the first hours of the war the Wehrmacht attempted to attack Sevastopol and the Black Sea Fleet, but the air attack was a divergence. The defense of Sevastopol (September 1941-July 1942) became the example of "the unabiding resistance of Soviet people." The Soviets lost 200,481 warriors, 156,880 never came back.
The governor of Sevastopol, Sergey Menyailo, spoke about the city's preparations for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory. According to Menyailo, 9,000 people will be awarded on the occasion of the anniversary.
When the Wehrmacht attacked Sevastopol, the Soviet troops left the city. The loss of the city led to the deterioration of the state of the Red Army and facilitated the advance of the German troops to the Volga region and the Caucasus.
The defense of Sevastopol lasted 250 days and it took only 1 week to liberate it. It was liberated on the morning of May 7, 1944, and had been almost entirely destroyed by that time.
Governor of Sevastopol Sergey Menyailo spoke about the city's preparations for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory. According to Menyailo, 9,000 people will be awarded on the occasion of the anniversary.
On May 9 Sevastopol will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory together with the rest of Russia. As the governon of Sevastopol, Sergey Menyaylo said, preparations for the event have already begun: "For us, May 9 in Sevastopol is not only the 70th anniversary of the victory, on May 7 it’s the 71st anniversary of the liberation of Sevastopol, meaning there are two holidays. We use not only our own resources, there will be many guests from other regions as well. We plan to hold a reconstruction of the events that took place in Sevastopol. In accordance with a presidential decree, veterans of the Great Patriotic War are being awarded. All in all, about 9000 people will receive awards."

On May 9 Sevastopol will host a parade, a naval parade and a fly-past parade. Last year, it was impossible to count the amount of people who took part in the Victory Day celebrations. It seemed as if there was an infinite number of people. Tens of thousands of people formed an endless stream marching in the main streets of Sevastopol, they also occupied viewing platforms of the city, including a hill to the north of the city. The military parade and the march lasted for more than 3.5 hours.
The pride of Sevastopol, the Black Sea Fleet, began to purchase new ships, planes and onshore buildings. The presence of troops has been increased as well. As retired Admiral Igor Kasatonov, who served as commander of the Black Sea Fleet in 1991-1992, told RIA Novosti, "in 1992 the Black Sea Fleet withdrew from Nikolaeyev, Kherson and Odessa; only Sevastopol, Theodosia and the Gvardeyskoye airfield near Simferopol remained. The unprecedented reduction of the Crimean troops began... Before March 16, 2014 the fleet consisted of 12,000 people instead of 25,000 under an agreement with Ukraine on the division of the fleet... The presence of the Black Sea Fleet in the Crimea served as the basis for the events which unfolded after February 23. One can say that the Black Sea Fleet prepared a springboard, the officers knew what was happening, where the Ukrainian troops were located, plans were drawn up. That is, the Black Sea Fleet performed its duties, "polite people" (the Army Special Forces) were brought there and the Supreme Council of Crimea was captured on the eve of February 28."
The military say that "a brilliant concentration of funds and special forces concealed by means which were unexpected for the Ukrainians was happening in Crimea and a wide range of measures to deceive the enemy was taken beforehand."

As a result, on March 16 Crimea and Sevastopol are celebrating the day of reunification with Russia. On this day, a drill walk of the Black Sea Fleet attended by more than 650 soldiers will take place in the central streets of Sevastopol and Simferopol. The personnel of the naval forces, coastal forces, marines and naval aviation fleet will march through the streets of the city singing army songs.
