Attacking the memory

Attacking the memory

President Petro Poroshenko “on behalf of the Ukrainian people” expressed gratitude to the heads of state who decided not to go to Russia to the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory.“On May 8th people of Ukraine will join the Europeans for the first time, join the Day of Commemoration of Victims of WWII; while on May 9th Moscow will hold a parade which will demonstrate weapons which are being used in Donetsk. Ukraine rejected an invitation to participate in the parade,” Interfax cites Poroshenko.

The Chief Scientific Officer of the Research Institute (military history) of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Colonel Miroslav Morozov, thinks that in connection with the Ukrainian events that unfolded in the world, pressure has been put on Russia. “For Russia and Russians, the memory of WWII is sacred. Now, somehow, an attack on this memory is being carried out. You can read regularly cynical, just insulting comments in the Western press about comparisons of Putin with Hitler, with his aggression, which he carried out in late 30s and early 40s. This completely ignores the essence of fascism, Nazism's essence, the essence of what the Soviet Union brought the people of the world and that modern Russia gives to its peoples. Where is the persecution, for example, on an ethnic basis? Where do we have the exclusive right of the Russian's to everything, as it was with the Germans in Nazi Germany?” Morozov asks.

“All is placed upside down in order to announce that Russia is a wrong country, the Russian political regime is wrong, to drive a wedge between the people of Russia and its government,” the historian is sure. “The anti-Russian campaign, which we can now see in the Western media, is advantageous for the sake of today's short-term political goals. And the memory of the millions who gave their lives for the victory is flouted by these people. And I very much want to believe that after all the remaining veterans, remaining progressive scientists, non-governmental organizations, as long as it does not want to recognize the rulers of these countries, will still be able to form in society, to convey to the next generation the memory of WWII, as the war is sacred, the victory in World War II as victory in the war is a sacred victory of the progressive forces of mankind over the forces of obscurantism, fascism, misanthropic ideology. And the memory of this war will not divide, but will unite nations.”
