South Ossetian authorities have announced that the restoration has been finished in the republic. This statement was made during a meeting of the South Ossetian authorities with the Russian Prime Minister in Moscow. However, in March 2011 the matter of the local university's condition was raised. According to the university's chancellor, Teimuraz Kokoyev, heating on the campus is very poor. Students and professors often catch cold. The quasi-repaired heating system has already burst twice, flooding a university library.
According to Department of Education officials, the cost of the restoration project has been estimated at approximately $24 million. However, they don’t say whether the money has already been allocated. More optimistic information was announced by Vyacheslav Sedov, the press secretary of the South Ossetian President. He said that a new university campus will be built in Tskhinvali by 2014-2015. He emphasized that planning will begin in 2011, and in 2012 the first construction stage will be finished.
At present 500 students graduate from the university annually. This number is virtually equal to the number of young people graduating from Tskhinvali high schools every year. However, most of the republic's young seek to enter Russian universities. The drain of young people goes on. By 2015, the number of people going to study and teach in South Ossetia will decrease.
