Azerbaijani oil was one of the primary factors in the victory over Nazism.
Azerbaijan is now preparing for the Victory Day celebrations. Every year the country celebrates the USSR’s victory over Nazism with great festivities. President Ilham Aliyev orders the honouring of veterans and all those who worked on the home front. This year the government will spent $11 million in order to support those who participated in the war.
Victory Day is not just a day off for the people of Azerbaijan. Our country paid much for this victory. 600 thousand Azerbaijani men and women went to the front. 120 people were decorated with the Order of Hero; 170 thousand were decorated with other orders and medals. A lot of people perished during the war.
However, that’s not all. Azerbaijan played an important role in the Soviet economy and industry. 70 per cent of all oil produced in the USSR during the war was produced in Azerbaijan. Workers of the energy industry contributed much to the cause of victory. So did Azerbaijani scientists, who invented a new technology for producing gasoline, technology that turned out to be extremely useful for the airforces.
