Authorities support secular Islamic model

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the establishment of a new university in the North Caucasus Federal District. The university, which will be established on the base of Stavropol Technical University, will educate secular specialists in Islam.

According to the President, it’s very important to establish dialogue between different nationalities and religions. Education is going to play a major role in the establishment of inter-ethnic peace. “I’m looking forward to the opening of a new university that will unite clerics and secular specialists studying Islam,” the President said.

Experts admit that social activism in the Caucasus is more widespread than in other regions of Russia. However, social activism there often carries religious connotations. That is why it is so important to pay attention to Islam and Islamic education.

The new university will be supported by both local authorities and federal governmental bodies. A total sum of 7 billion rubles will be spend on the project, 6 billion of which come from the federal government and 1 billion from the region’s administration.
