The incident concerning fans of Anzhi football club received wide-spread coverage in Ingushetia. Most experts think that the farce of “bored” young people dishonors the whole nation.
Recently near Nazran a group of young people attacked five vehicles, in which fans of the football club Anzhi were being driven. The attackers fired from airguns and threw stones at the vehicles. Two people were hurt. Later that evening the head of Ingushetia, Yunus-bek Yevkurov, phoned the head of Dagestan, Magomedsalam Magomedov, and said he was sorry about the incident and promised to compensate for damage. The head of Dagestan underlined the strong inter-ethnic friendship between the peoples of Dagestan and Ingushetia. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Security Council of Ingushetia. Strict measures were applied to the staff of law-enforcement agencies, which were required to provide security for the fans and didn’t fix the situation.
Representatives of non-governmental youth unions of Ingushetia and Dagestan adopted a joint statement to the young people of both republics, in which they urged them not to exaggerate the incident as inter-ethnic. However, this call wasn’t heard by the mass media. On the Internet and newspapers people continue to search for an ethnic background to the incident. Rumours were spread that in Makhachkala a mass beating of Ingush students took place. A well-known member of the scientific council of the Moscow Carnegie Centre, Nikolay Petrov, states: “The incident in Ingushetia proves there is no united Caucasus. The conflict with Anzhi fans has ethnic grounds. Such conflicts cannot be everyday ones.”
At the same time there are many examples of mass fights, which appeared due to banal arguments about who-is-cooler. Perhaps, people in Russia still cannot overcome the bandit heritage of the 1990s. I know the friendly way in which Ingushetians are treated in Dagestan.
Meanwhile, the suspected initiators of the attack, the Gazdiev brothers, were arrested in Ingushetia. Several people from the group of Anzhi fans arrived in Ingushetia to identify the participants in the incident.
