South Ossetia: election race in figures

In the second week of South Ossetia's presidential election campaign, the initiative group Public Opinion of South Ossetia is interviewing the citizens for finding out electoral preferences. The respondent base consists of 450 people weekly. First presidential elections in South Ossetia as an independent state will take place on November 13, 2011. On the same day referendum on the status of the Russian language will be held. New data gathered by the initiative group Public Opinion of South Ossetia showed that number of voters, who still have no preferences in election campaign, decreased in comparison to the last week data. Number of respondents, who refuse to answer questions, decreased too.

There are several reasons for it, experts say. First of all, the society politicizes and expects radical positive changes from a new president. Secondly, since the first poll was carried out in Tskhinvali and regions of South Ossetia on October 15-16, people receive more information on the candidates and their election programs. Most of the candidates began election race. They hold meetings with population, agitate and promote themselves through the media and TV. The leaders of the race gain more and more supporters.

The leader is the minister of emergency situations Anatoly Bibilov (33.4%).

The second place is taken by the director of baked goods factory, Vadim Tskhovrebov, his rating didn’t grow almost (last week it was 8.3%, this week 8.9%). The only woman among candidates, the former education minister, Alla Dzhioyeva, has support of 6.4% of respondents. The vice-mayor of Tskhinvali, Alan Kotayev, showed positive dynamic last week: from 4.3% up to 6.2%.

A big surprise of this week is presence at top-five a teacher of a sporting school, Alan Kochiyev, who is arrested and has no opportunities to carry out agitation. The candidate Anatoly Bibilov suggested changing punishment for Kochiyev for recognizance not to leave. He urged other candidates to be guarantors of Kochiyev and provide him with the same opportunities as other candidates have. As the result, this week Alan Kochiyev got 5.6% cut out Tasoyev from top-five.
