In the Israeli city of Maalot, the International Association Israel-Azerbaijan (AzIs) held an evening devoted to memory of the first president of Azrbaijan Heydar Aliyev dated to the eighth anniversary of his death. Hundreds of Azerbaijanis living in Israel came to Maalot from all regions of the country to pay tribute to Heydar Aliyev.
“This outstanding leader took position of the president for less than ten years. I have heard that these years were a basic for Azerbaijan’s breakthrough in all spheres of governmental establishment. During these ten years more had been done than during a century in some countries. When I arrived to Baku and saw an amazingly beautiful city and self-confident people, I understood that the current president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev is a worthy successor of his great father,” the vice mayor of Maalot Arkady Pomeranets said.
The rabbi Moshe Hodael, who was sent to Baku in 1994 for working in a local Jew community, concentrated in his speech on the Jew issue in Azerbaijan and attitude of Heydar Aliyev to Jews: “I have never seen in any former Soviet republic such warm and sincere attitude to Jews like in Azerbaijan. This tolerance is one of bright features of Azerbaijani peoples and Azerbaijani №1 – Heydar Aliyev.”
“The president of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev was a great man and pure national leader. Like the greatest political activists Otto Von Bismarck and Winston Churchill he saw his country’s future. Moreover, he felt it,” the chairman of AzIs Josef Shagal said in the end of the evening.
