Sergey Karpov, Dean of the History Department of the Moscow State University (MSU), member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has requested Azerbaijani students to join celebrations significant for both states and “uniting our peoples, uniting our states, uniting our traditions”.
Russia will mark the 1150th anniversary of statehood this year. A set of events will be organized to mark the anniversary. They include a mass conference held by the History Department of the MSU, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian State University for the Humanities and a set of other education centers. The conferences will be dedicated to development of Russian from the period of foundation of Kievan State by the Rurik Dynasty, foundation of the Russian Crown, formation of the Soviet and democratic Russia. Karpov noted that participants of the conference will determine links between the stages of Russia’s development and discuss the most complicated and controversial aspects of its history.
2012 became the year of Russian history. Karpov emphasized that, besides the Kievan State, the talks will stress on the critical point of the Time of Troubles in 1612, victory over Napoleon in 1812, anniversary of Peter Stolypin’s reforms, the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad, a breakthrough in the Great Patriotic War. A visit will be organized to the Borodino Field together with French scientists, a set of science works will be published, student and school competitions will be held on formation of Russian statehood. A state commission was formed this year to organize and hold such events.
“I believe that our president’s decision to announce the Year of Russian Statehood will help form the right impartial image of Russia abroad”, Karpov said. The dean of the History Department called for efforts to make Russian history free from falsifications by establishing verification databases “which we could base on when talking about victories and complications our country went through”.
