20 years ago, the first integrated media resource of the members of the Commonwealth of Independent States appeared. The TV company “Mir” began covering political, economic, and humanitarian events happening in the region. Heads of 10 states made the decision to found the company. The challenging and important task for journalists was to form the unified information source for million residents of the CIS.
Establishing of “Mir” took place in complicated time – right after the dissolution of the USSR and appearance of independent states. Despite difficulties and ambiguity of the processes happened in this period, the geopolitical reality made leaders of the states solve new tasks. It was realized that nobody would benefit from complete breaking up in various spheres, including information. It led to necessity of forming “a new format” of the mass media. Today, after 20 years, it is clear that the team of “Mir” fulfilled their task. The audience of the company surpasses 70 million people – every fourth resident of the CIS. It is respected among journalists, viewers, and broadcast listeners. The target of “Mir” is to tell about each other, the chairman of the company Radik Batyrshin stated: “This is a niche TV channel. We don’t try to compete with CNN or Russia-24. We are a specialized information channel. The RBK channel speaks from the business point of view, we speak from the point of view of the unified information space. A lot has happened in 20 years. Soma states left the CIS, others became associative members. Many things were destroyed for political or situational reasons. Nevertheless, 20 years has passed and “Mir” is alive.”
In 2008 the company shifted to digital and multimedia technologies. Today “Mir” has its own sources for collecting news, it organized videobridges and video conferences with any place in the world. Broadcasting is provided through satellite platforms and mobile stations. The company adopts cable nets and online Internet television. The news multimedia portal www.Mir24.tv was launched 2 years ago. Today 2 million users attend it monthly. The broadcasting area covers territory from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The International information pool of TV and radio companies of the post-Soviet space was initiated where “Mir” is a coordinator and technical operator of gathering and transferring of information.
