Smart Caucasus 2014

From October 21st to December 31st Vestnik Kavkaza, the History Department of the MSU and the Center “Sever-Yug” are conducting a contest of analytical journalism for young journalists, political scientists, economists and sociologists of Russia and countries of the South Caucasus (under 35). The aim of the contest is to find talented young analysts who are able to see problems of the political structure and the future of the Caucasus region in new ways, to speak about the problems appropriately, to analyze the main tendencies in the development of state and social subjects of the Caucasus. Participants in the contest will have an opportunity to be published in Vestnik Kavkaza, will become participants of an annual Caucasian conference organized by the History Department of MSU, the Center “Sever-Yug,” and Vestnik Kavkaza. Winners will be given a monetary award.

Aims and goals of the contest

The goal of the contest is the formation of a view on the current actual situation in the Caucasus region (including Russian regions which belong to the North Caucasus and South Federal Districts, and the states of the South Caucasus) through the mass media and the formation of a pool of young experts on the Caucasus, who are able to reconsider and modernize outdated approaches to describe key aspects of the socio-political and socio-economic processes which are going on in the Caucasus region.

Aims of the contest:

-          Intensification of mass media activity on the formation of a real image of the Caucasus in the public information space;

-          Finding, attracting, and supporting journalists, political scientists, economists, and sociologists who professionally deal with the topic of the Caucasus; providing them with career growth opportunities;

-          Charity fundraising in support of talented journalists;

-          Increasing the number and improving the quality of articles which are aimed at covering the problems and successes of the Russian Federation and other Caucasus countries in economic and social development, as well as in the foreign political sphere.

Initiator of the contest

Vestnik Kavkaza takes one of the leading positions among Russian media focused on the Caucasus. Characteristics of Vestnik Kavkaza are an absence of political bias, a non-provocative character and balanced presentation of information. This complex and conflict-prone region demands specific forms of information presentation and reacting to emergency and crisis situations. Vestnik Kavkaza works in four directions – articles, analysis, television and Internet radio. Vestnik Kavkaza regularly holds so-called discussion clubs; due to them users can find out views of various social layers. Projects are successfully implemented due to the knowledge of leading journalists, academics of major Russian universities, political scientists, economists and other professions who study the Caucasus from different points of view.

Participants

Authors, representatives of youth, journalists, political scientists, economists, sociologists, and so on from 20 to 35 years old can participate in the contest.

Nominations

Article of the Year (five aspects – Topical Subject, Internal Policy, Foreign Policy, Economics and the Social Sphere). There will be five first places, five second places, and five third places.

Materials submitted to the contest won’t be reviewed.

The initiators of the contest have a right to publish materials presented for the contest.

The winners of the contest will be awarded diplomas, souvenirs and special awards from the sponsors.
