Fighting drug addiction

Drug addiction is a serious threat to the development of Russia and
its people. A state anti-drug strategy to the year 2020 has been was
sigend into force by Dmitry Medvedev on 9th June, noting that the
strategy needs more than just state resources. He said that civil
society has a much better chance of coping with drug addiction.

Russia's annual round of operative-preventive activities began on May
14th, named ‘Mak’ (or Poppy), aimed at eliminating illegal plantations
used for drug production and initiating criminal cases against people
cultivating such plants. Last year six areas of psychotropic plants
were discovered and destroyed, with a total area of 60,350 sq m. The
total weight of the plants destroyed was 105,540 kg.

This year operation ‘Mak’ is being carried out together with the
border operation ‘Unity-2010’, coordinated by the Border Service of
the Russian FSB (Federal Security Service) in Ingushetia. In the first
stage of the operation 3 hemp fields covering tens of hectares were
discovered. Hemp is used for the production of marijuana. There are
currently over 150,000 drug addicts registered in drug abuse clinics
in Ingushetia, with a rising number of young people taking
desomorphine. Heroine found in Ingushetia mainly comes from
Afghanistan.
