Second attempt of Artur Beterbiyev

Second attempt of Artur Beterbiyev
Baku is hosting the Boxing World Championship. The status of Olympic qualification makes it special. Only those who are prize winners in all three weights, except for heavyweight, will get a ticket for the Olympic Games in 2012. Heavyweight boxers should simply qualify for the quarter final.

The Russian team especially puts its hopes in the best boxer of the world of 2010, the silver medal winner of the Beijing Olympic Games, Artur Beterbiyev. After triumphant wins in the weight category up to 81 kg and failure in the final fight in Beijing the sportsman yielded the category to Egor Mekhontsev and shifted to the 91 kg category, where he has performed successfully. Both boxers have adapted well in their new categories and know they are leaders of the Russian national team. On October 3rd Artur Beterbiyev will have his first fight against the Mexican Mario Eredi, who won the first round.

The Azerbaijani heavyweight boxer, Teimur Mamedov, the winner of the European Cup 2011, in which the Chechen boxer didn’t participate, called Beterbiyev the main rival, “whom he knows and will defeat him.” The point is that in the previous Olympic qualification in 2007 Artur Beterbiyev failed to win because of unfair refereeing. Most experts said that he won the fight against Abbos Atoyev, but the golden medal wasn’t taken by the Chechen.

In Beijing Beterbiyev was unfairly judged in favour of a Chinese sportsman. We hope that the second attempt to win the Olympic Games will be successful.
